Getting Started
A good place to start is by looking at all the travel associated with running your business and developing a plan to make your travel smarter and more cost effective.
The New Zealand Transport Agency has a simple, clear explanation of what Workplace Travel Planning it is and how to do it, with handy templates you can adapt for your workplace - see NZTA Workplace Travel Planning You can also contact your local Council for assistance.
It helps to appoint a staff member to be responsible for coordinating your travel planning, to put into place the actions you decide on, and to keep others interested and motivated.
One of the first actions is to undertake a travel survey to find out where staff live and how they get to work. The survey can be as simple or as detailed as you wish. NZTA have an on-line travel survey which you can adapt for your woprkplace, or the Travel Planner from your local Council could help you design a survey. You could use and adapt one of the recent examples of travel surveys done by:
- Canterbury District Health Board (they have to cater for shift workers) - contact meg.christie@cdhb.govt.nz
- Christchurch City Council, who did a large workplace survey when they shifted premises – contact michelle.stevenson@ccc.govt.nz
