The purpose of this 70,111-hectare park is to preserve a magnificent and unique mountain area in its natural state for the benefit and enjoyment of all people. It encompasses 65 km of the Southern Alps and the longest glacier in New Zealand. The nucleus of the park was set aside as recreation reserve in 1885 and 1887, but it was not formally gazetted as a national park until 1953.
This site offers information on the various sub-alpine and alpine tracks that can be undertaken in the National Park, and details for further enquiries
