Legislation to establish the new agency to implement the government’s rural walking access policies is to be introduced next year.
It will be a Crown entity in status and will inherit the provisions of the New Zealand Walkways Act 1990.
Among its responsibilities will be the co-ordination of key stakeholders including local and central government, helping local groups with access issues and responsibility for the mediation of disputes over walking access issues.
There will also be a contestable fund, to be managed by the agency, to assist with the establishment of new walking access routes.
The agency will be monitored by the Ministry of Agriculture & Forestry.
