Conferences galore in 2010
There are several conferences coming up in 2010 which will be of interest to people working in the field of walking and pedestrians.  Firstly, our very own New Zealand conference on Walking and Liveable Communities focusing on “Dollars and Sense of Walking” August 2-3.  If you would like to present a paper or workshop, check here for more information.
If you’re going to be in the UK at the end of June, you could head to York and the Towards Carfree Cities conference “How do we get there” 28 June – 1 July
If you fancy the Hague, call in at the Walk21 conference “Getting Communities back on their feet” November 17-19

Walk Across Auckland Harbour Bridge
Walking and cycling campaigners have proposed a novel user-pays tolling scheme to blaze a pathway across Auckland Harbour Bridge in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.  The Getacross Campaign, supported by the Holmes Consulting Group of engineers, has unveiled a proposal for a $12 million shared walking and cycleway tucked under the outside cantilevered edge of the bridge's southbound clip-on.  NZTA are considering the proposal.  Have a look at the fun music video about cycling across the harbour bridge.

A Traveller's Tale - The pleasures of travelling by foot
Gillian Souter opens her book with these words from American writer Ralph Waldo Emerson: "Few men know how to take a walk. The qualifications...are endurance, plain clothes, old shoes, an eye for nature, good humour, vast curiosity, good speech, good silence and nothing too much."  hear Gillian interviewed on  ABC Radio National
