In 2022 we recognised the work done by Waka Kotahi / NZ Transport Agency on raised pedestrian crossings in the Wairarapa along State Highway 2. We awarded the work a Golden Foot Walking Award in the Urban Connection category.
These raised crossings were selected in places in the Wairarapa small towns that could help children walk to school and connect important walking routes in the community by making it safer to cross the road.
This is a big departure from the car-centred thinking that used to dominate state highway management and only prioritised car travel.
An additional benefit of this project was to improve the speed environment in these small urban areas.
As a result of the work on the crossings, the speeds recorded around the raised crossings were reduced and drivers were more aware of the crossing.
Pedestrians reported feeling safer and those using mobility scooters were particularly positive.
The raised crossings have improved accessibility for many users as they provide a no-step, no-slope crossing point.
The busy state highway through these towns can create an east west barrier for people walking and the effect of slowing traffic along the road improves the pedestrian connection along the whole road.
At our 2023 Walking Summit, David (Rolly) Rowland from Waka Kotahi gave a presentation about the raised pedestrian crossings (at 7.49 mins) and the Road to Zero. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cydKM4Xzpsg
