Whitby Conclusion walkway, Porirua City Council - a 2022 Golden Foot Walking Awards winner

The Conclusion Walkway project was an upgrade by Porirua City Counicl of an old 2.5km long service access track in an under-utilised steep reserve.

The completed works have made the track significantly more accessible for users with varying levels of fitness and mobility, all year round.

The project sought to improve connectivity between local communities while maintaining great views out over Te Awarua-o-Porirua Harbour and the Whitireia Peninsular.

The key barriers to more people enjoying and utilising the old track were the clay surface and steep gradients – this combined with wet weather made the track very hazardous at times.

In multiple places along the track the gradients were over 1:4, making it challenging for those with limited mobility and/or fitness.  The surface and gradient combined with wet weather made the track very slippery which meant it was really only accessible during the summer months.

With the upgrade work now complete, the steepest gradient is 1:6, the surface is all weather which makes the walkway accessible all year round.

In addition, the track now can be used by a broader age range and by people with restricted walking ability.
