The walk to school in the UK, with Living Streets

Jenni shared insights into how the United Kingdom have encouraged and supported children to walk to school over many years. The serious issues with air pollution and the flow on impacts to children's health have been key motivators. Some significant changes in approach have resulted and valuable lessons have been learned.

Ben will report on two national surveys (total sample over 4000) with a focus on transportation in New Zealand and New Zealander’s appetite for active transportation, with a focus on walking. There is clearly demand for safe, comfortable and walkable cities in New Zealand.

Don't slip up: Design, maintenance and pedestrian accidents

Abstract Remit

Best practice walking environments require a safe walking space. Poor design and low maintenance of walking surfaces and roadside furniture can reduce safety, walking ambience, and cause inefficient walking speeds. In New Zealand around 700 pedestrians are admitted to hospital each year due to slips, trips and stumbles in the road environment, with many more unreported accidents, yet little is known regarding the specific physical characteristics that foster pedestrian accidents.

Speaker Profile

Nigel Cass has worked in sports management in both New Zealand and the UK since 1990.

Nigel joined the New Zealand Rugby Union in 2001 as Provincial Union Relationship Manager.  He was also Chair of the Board of the IRB Wellington International Sevens and in 2004 he took on the role of Project Manager for the DHL NZ Lions Series and also led the bid process for Rugby World Cup 2011.

Nigel is currently General Manager, Tournament Services for Rugby New Zealand 2011 Ltd.

Model Communities and Integrated Planinng Toolkit

Abstract Remit

The NZ Transport Agency recently announced that New Plymouth and Hastings will collectively receive funding of $7.28m to become New Zealand's first walking and cycling model communities.

The purpose of this investment is to help create an environment that will make walking and cycling easy transport choices for people in New Plymouth and Hastings. Through this funding we’re also encouraging councils to integrate walking and cycling into their transport planning and other initiatives.

Webbed Walking, sharing inspiring stories online

Abstract Remit

Stories are part of everyone's lives and the Feet First website has chosen narrative interaction  to encourage participation in both walking and sharing ideas. The stories which are placed on line are situated in the local environment and provide inspiration and ideas that provide local solutions. The  use of the web in this instance is largely participatory, and based on open source media through the use of citizen – centric principles.
