Submission on Ageing Strategy 2018

Submission

Living Streets Aotearoa Inc. (LSA) welcomes the opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed Ageing Strategy.

Terminology

LSA notes that Age Concern prefers the term “older people”. LSA would recommend that the Ageing Strategy refers to ‘older people” rather than “seniors”. LSA will use the term “older people” in this submission.

Safer Pedestrians

Pedestrians are New Zealand’s forgotten road victims.
Each year almost four times as many pedestrians as cyclists are killed on New Zealand roads. Yet government has no Pedestrian Safety Plan and makes no investment in Urban Pedestrian infrastructure. We need an enquiry.
Please support Visual Impairment Charitable Trust Aotearoa NZ (VICTA) in this quest. Let’s make walking safer for everyone.

Please read through VICTA's statements below and sign their petition

Submission on Wellington City Council Annual Plan 2013

This is our submission on the 2013 Draft Annual Plan for Wellington City Council. Our submission covered the lack of priority and projects for pedestrians, supported the Miramar development to provide better pedestrian facilities, and supported the further development of 'the Promenade' waterfront walk from the railway station to Kumutoto to improve pedestrian access.

Rules for Drivers to Give Way to Pedestrians at Intersections

Living Streets wants greater emphasis to be given to keeping pedestrians and other vulnerable road users safe.

In the first instance, we think the Road Code should treat pedestrians as it treats other road users at intersections (mode equality). This would mean that turning vehicles would give way to pedestrians walking straight through (see the diagram below).
